This surfboard is the result of a collaboration between Jean Pierre Stark (Master shaper) and Jonathan Bunel (founder of Surf Designs, competitor, instructor).
The objective was to make a high-performance but “easy to surf” shortboard, which could go in relatively big waves (double overhead with triple overhead), fast and hollow. For example Mundaka perfect to name just one!
This surfboard is thus initially named "pumping minigun" because it combines the ease and handling that a gun can provide in big waves, and the maneuverability that one can look for in a shortboard. This is ultimately what we expect from a “Step Up” board.
This board is therefore surfed with a bit of length. The front of the board is quite narrow and the rails are relatively thin. This allows the board to penetrate the wave well at high speed. The bottom of the board is a concave in the middle which segues into a deep double concave with lift at the back (especially useful for skating under the lip) and a nice final “vee” near the tail. The board naturally channels water to keep it easy to ride and handle small choppy waves... Going from one rail to another is a real treat!
This surfboard gives you ease from the paddle and take off and allows you to go for bottum turns far on the flat of the wave, before going back up to find the tube or hit the lip. If things slow down, dare to look for the round house cut back grabé, and you won't be disappointed!
This board is therefore to have in your quiver and to take on a trip as soon as you are chasing beautiful, perfect waves that have power, to make big committed curves...
We recommend reinforced glass (6+4/6) to gain strength. The board is then a little heavier than your standard shortboard, but that's not a bad thing. In fact, it will gain in inertia and therefore in driving at high speed... without the risk of breaking it from the first fall!
This model is therefore our favorite, developed, tested and approved by the riders of the Stark & Surf Designs team.
Absolutely worth discovering for any good level surfer who is not afraid of it! |
